| | In Print: UPN’s Legacy: A Show Worth Saving! October 31, 1999 Talk about undiscovered shows! UPN’s "Legacy" – airing locally at 8 p.m. Fridays on KCOP/13 – is a terrific new family Western drama set in the rolling blue grass hills of 1880’s Kentucky. The scenery is beautiful, the cast charismatic, and the storylines promising as the writers develop stories about a family struggling to survive, maintain its values, and deal with a street-smart orphan (17) it takes in and lets stay after a fire almost destroys a portion of the farm. "Legacy" boasts the talent of exec prod Chris Abbott, a veteran of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and "Little House on the Prairie.’’ The trick is to focus on the family, but then involve each of them in relationships with others so we get to know the people of the town as well (Think "Dr. Quinn’’ here). Brett Cullen is solid as the patriarch dad, and so is Jo Anderson ("Sisters" and "Beauty & The Beast’’) and Lane Smith ("Superman’’). All the younger actors show promise. The bad news is "Legacy" isn’t getting the attention it deserves. With FOX introducing the western "Brimstone" at 8 p.m. Fridays, maybe UPN should consider moving "Love Boat" to 8 p.m. as a lead-in to "Legacy" at 9 p.m. A stronger lead-in may boost its ratings and encourage UPN to at least stick with it through the season. It’s one of UPN’s few fine offerings this season, and deserves a shot at success. © T.V. Los Angeles |
