Brett Cullen plays Ned Logan, widowed head of a proud and prominent family in post-Civil War Kentucky. Ned has four kids of his own, but his heart is big, and he takes in a roguish 17-year-old orphan named Jeremy Bradford (Ron Melendez).

Whenever trouble strikes -- and the Logans seem to court it -- Jeremy is implicated. But patriarch Ned stands by the kid in the fine and honorable tradition of Ben Cartwright and Victoria Barkley.

"Legacy" is called "Legacy" because Ned Logan, a horse breeder, firmly believes in the philosophy of his Irish forebears, that is, to build a family through unconditional love and firm support while providing opportunities to others who are less fortunate.

It's a noble legacy, but even within the Logan family it is a source of controversy. At least it's predictable controversy. (And they get the good old barn fire out of the way in the first episode.)
